This is a traditional style of recipe prepared as side dish for Poori in the regions of South India especially in Coimbatore. This is called as “Masaal” generally and is really as  yummy, mild flavored side for Poori. Potatoes are rich in dietary fiber and when taken in boiled form at-least weekly once provides sufficient essential nutrients required for the proper functioning of human body.


Potato – 4
Tomato -1
Green chillies -2
Dry red chillies -2
Curry leaves 0few
Ginger -1/2 inch
Cinnamon -1 finger size
Cloves -3
Mustard -1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
Oil -2 tbsp 
Coriander leaves -1 tsp
Salt as required

  1. Wash and pressure cook the potatoes for about 2-3 whistles. Once the pressure is down,peel off the skin and smash roughly and keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan/vessel, add mustard and let it splutter.
  3. Along with it add Cinnamon, Cloves and add the thin sliced Onions, Chillies, Curry leaves and fry well until slight golden brown.
  4. Now add the chopped tomatoes and cook until mushy.
  5. Now add the smashed potatoes, 2-3 cups water, salt, Turmeric powder and let it boil for about 15 minutes.
  6. Finally garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Poori Masaal
  •  Do not smash the potato completely. Leave few big pieces too as shown in the picture.
  • If you want the masala to be watery add little more water. I prefer to be the masala always in thick consistency.
